Have you thought of having a Bridal portrait session yourself? “What‘s that?” I hear you ask. In short, it is a photoshoot that focuses on the bride in her wedding attire, typically before the wedding day.

“Is it worth it? Why would I do that? Isn’t that what the wedding day is for?” Might be your next questions. Fair enough! In this blog post, let's explore how bridal portraits can help brides feel empowered; why it is a good idea to have one (don’t forget that I offer it for free when booking me for the whole day of your wedding), how one can prepare for the perfect shoot, and what are the top tips for working with your photographer.

Why Bridal Portraits Matter

Bridal portraits provide a chance for brides to celebrate their beauty and the journey leading up to the wedding. Statistics show that brides who take the time to do a bridal portrait session report feeling more confident on their big day. According to a survey by The Knot, 85% of brides say that overcoming pre-wedding jitters is easier when they have these portraits taken first.

Bridal portraits serve as a wonderful experience. They are a chance to express one's personality through style, makeup, and setting—something that can sometimes be overlooked in the hustle and bustle of wedding preparation.

Preparing for Your Bridal Portraits

Getting ready for your bridal portraits can be an enjoyable experience. To begin, consider what style you want to portray. Will you go classic with a timeless gown, or would you like to incorporate a modern twist? This is the perfect opportunity to experiment.

  1. Select the Right Dress: Choose a dress that reflects your style while also making you feel comfortable. It can be the dress you will be wearing on your big day, but it can also be your a silk gown, your evening dress or a dress you very much like but that has no role on the actual wedding day, Think about the details—a long train, intricate lacework. Don’t forget to take into consideration the location. A beach setting may call for a lighter fabric, while a garden may offer you the chance to wear something voluminous.

  2. Think About Makeup: It’s wise to have a makeup artist who understands your vision. A trial run is always recommended to make sure your look is just right. Remember, makeup for photography can differ from everyday looks - you might want to go a little bolder! If you haven’t had a chance to have your hair and make-up trial with your MUA, see if this can be done on the bridal portrait photoshoot day. A great opportunity for a test run and the perfect excuse to make the most of your hair and make-up trial.

  3. Choose the Location: The backdrop can make or break your bridal portraits. Choose a setting that resonates with you—be it a sun-kissed beach or a garden filled with lush blooms. Take some time to scout locations that ideally reflect your personality. Don’t forget to

  4. Timeline: This is entirely up to you but as a rule of thumb, you may want to schedule your bridal portrait for 4-8 weeks prior to your wedding date so a/your dress alterations are finished b/your photographer has time to send you the photos, and you can pick your favourite one and have it framed and displayed on the wedding day. They can also be offered to members of the family on the day as well.

  5. The bouquet: Bouquets aren’t cheap so it is entirely up to you if you decide to have a copy of it done, a smaller version or none at all.
